How to Avoid Getting A DUI by using your Smartphone

Plan Ahead

If you are planning to go out for a few drinks, make sure you have these apps on your phone. They can help you prevent a DUI charge.

Thanks to constantly evolving technology, smartphone apps give drivers a reliable way to monitor their alcohol intake. Some apps even come with a personal breathalyzer device which will measure your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). According to a 2015 New York Times report on smartphone breathalyzer tests, there are currently more than 100 different models available, generally priced with the $100 range. The devices have a nozzle you blow into. This creates a chemical reaction to measure the alcohol in your breath. The app then factors in your sex, age, and weight to give you a final BAC reading.

Avoiding a DUI

It can be hard to measure by yourself how many units of alcohol you have had, especially out drinking with friends. Keep in mind that it is not a good idea to solely rely on an app to test your BAC level. External conditions may cause the app to give a bad or false reading. Most companies recommend waiting at least 20 minutes after your last drink for the best results. This means that any initial reading could be significantly different than what it would be if you got pulled over. However, it is still useful to have the app as an extra point of reference if you think you may be okay to drive. When in doubt, don’t get behind the wheel! Alternatively, make sure you have a ride-sharing app downloaded on to your phone, such as Uber or Lyft. You could also have a credible taxi phone number. If you are not sure if you should drive, using one of these ride-share apps or a taxi should always be the preferred option. Better safe than sorry!
